Shirley Battrick
I am a potter living and working in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast. I have lived and studied pottery in the United States and am a graduate of ANU School of Art. My current work looks at domesticity through the use of the tradition domestic earthenware and is reflected in the serving/ receiving forms of pourers and bowls. I have used a variety of decorative techniques to tell a story. With these works I am looking at the marital relationship with a particular emphasis on domestic violence.
'Showtime' the face we show the world that hides the reality of abuse beneath.
'Then and Now' the words of victims and the everyday images examine the past and the future - abuse and escape.
'Free to Dream' the bright, happy colours and images of freedom and personal growth.
